Aroma Therapy: Homemade Oil
June 21, 2008 – 1:01 pmHomemade oil is a great alternative to buying prefabricated oil blends in the store. When you make your own massage or body oil, you can choose the exact ingredients that suit you. Read through these tips before concocting a homemade oil blend of your own.
How do You Make Homemade Oil?
Massage or body oil can be made by combining essential oils with carrier oils. Essential oils are 100% pure extract from fragrant herbs and plants. The oil is retrieved through a steam distillation method. It can take hundreds of leaves to produce just a few drops of essential oil, so attempting this at home is not recommended.
Essential oils are extremely concentrated and potent, so they should not be applied directly to the skin without first diluting with a carrier oil. Examples of carrier oils include grapeseed, sweet almond, olive, jojoba, rose hip and sesame. They are easily absorbed by the skin and facilitate the absorption of the essential oil.
Carrier oils have a superior moisturizing effect on the skin while essential oils work to promote a healthy mind, body and spirit. For your own homemade oil, mix about 15 drops of essential oil with 1 oz. of carrier oil. The combination will make you look and feel healthy all over.
